Sep 07, 2016 06:08PM
By Judy Elsner Fall is in the air and it is that time of year that the Springville/Mapleton Company of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers are anticipating their 2016-2017 activities. The organization celebrated the arrival of Brigham Young and the early pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 on September 1st at their annual Jubilee. This is a time when all nine camps of the S/M Company meet together for a program and to socialize. This year John Bessendorfer who owns an artifact museum in Charleston, Utah, was the keynote guest speaker. He is a former teacher and a “Collector and Keeper of the Past”. In the September camp meetings the lesson will be “Stories of Kindness on the Trail” and the story of “Beef Steak Harrison” known to the Springville pioneers will be one area of discussion. In October the camps will learn about the Salt Lake City “Pioneer Museum School Room and the Desert Alphabet”. Anyone interested in joining the DUP is encouraged to go to, then click on “membership” and then “application form” then print and fill out the form. If you have any questions, you may call the president of the Springville/Mapleton Company, Joy Pinckney at 801-491-4382. On September 17th from 10AM to 1PM the S/M Company will have activities at the Springville Pioneer Museum to coincide with the Springville Historical Society’s commemoration of Heritage Day. Springville was settled in 1850 by eight pioneer families that crossed the plains and were sent by Brigham Young to settle the area. The museum is located at 175 South Main. There will be games, a handcart, gunny sack races, pioneer dress ups, stick horses, and a button on a string game. A weaving demonstration and opportunities for family research will be available. The Museum will also be open regular hours on Saturday, September 17, until 4PM. It is open on Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays 1PM -4PM. You may call 801-491-2076 for an appointment or tour at other times. Groups are always welcome. There is no charge. Come and learn about “Daughters of the Future” “Keepers of the Past".
