Utah Valley picks up 5-1 win at Idaho State

r

Utah Valley scored four goals in a 17-minute stretch late in the second half to secure a 5-1 road win at Idaho State Sunday afternoon at Davis Field in Pocatello.

r

rThe win snaps a three-match winless streak for the Wolverines, who improve to 5-3-1 on the season. Idaho State falls to 3-7 with the setback.

“I think you could see our legs were still a little heavy from the double overtime game against Utah the other night,” said Utah Valley head coach Brent Anderson. “It took us a while to get going. We were going forward in the first half but really didn’t make the connections in the box or in the final third. In the second half we started to move forward and get the connections in front of the goal that we needed and then it started to open up for us. We really needed a game where we got our attack going and this was a great match for the team with lots of shots and multiple players scoring.”

r

The five goals are the most Utah Valley has scored in a single match this season. The last time UVU scored five goals was in a 5-1 win over Idaho State at Clyde Field on Sept. 10 of last season. UVU also tallied a season-high 31 shots, including a season-high 15 shots on goal. The Wolverines also had a season-high 13 corner kicks on the day.

r

Sydney Fitzpatrick gave the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute as she received a pass from Abby Jameson down the right side, dribbled past a defender and fired a shot past the keeper for her first score of the season.

r

Tied 1-1 in the 71st minute, UVU’s Breanna DeWaal was fouled in the box and put the penalty kick in the back of the net for her first-ever collegiate goal. DeWaal’s score gave the Wolverines a 2-1 advantage.

r

Sarah Cipperley scored her first goal of the year in the 75th minute as she received a pass from DeWaal near the top of the box and fired it past the keeper on the right side for the goal.

r

Leesa Stowe scored her first career goal in the 87th minute after she received a pass from DeWaal in the top right corner of the box and sent it past a pair of ISU defenders and the keeper for the score.

r

Alexis Peterson rounded out the UVU scoring in the 88th minute as she sent a shot into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season. Tori Smith was credited with the assist on the score.

r

DeWaal led the Wolverines with a match-high eight shots, including two on goal. Sara Callister tallied four shots with one on net, while Smith and Stowe each registered three shots.

r

Utah Valley has a week off before hosting Grand Canyon at Clyde Field on Monday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m.
