CLAS Halloween river boat cruise: A McGee from Tennessee on the Provo River

Oct 26, 2017 10:00AM
Let me assure you this is not a genealogy article. However, my maiden name is McGee, and my family has roots in Tennessee. I had never read or heard the poem, “The Cremation of Sam McGee” until Tuesday, October 3, when my husband and I took the Halloween Cruise at CLAS Ropes Course on Center Street in Provo.  At the end of the cruise, I asked the captain how many times he has a McGee from Tennessee on his boat. He said, “Maybe never.” He asked if I had an ancestor named Sam. I told him “Maybe.” Another scary story that the Captain sometimes tells is the story of the “Headless Horseman.”

The CLAS Ropes Course Halloween Cruise is a themed adventure riverboat ride on the Provo River. You can expect to see over 100 hand-carved jack-o-lanterns along the shoreline and wonderfully spooky holiday decorations which reflect in the water creating a wonderful Halloween event. You will experience a pirate attack, a scary story told by the boat captain, a round trip that takes about 20-25 minutes.

The cruise boat seats up to 40 people. Because the weather has become quite cool at night, be sure to dress warmly and wear a jacket. CLAS caters to the young and young at heart, so come expecting family-friendly fun. Because the river has been dredged to be quite deep, children wear life jackets.

While you are waiting for your ride you can watch the free movie “Spooky Bats and Scaredy Cats.”

You do not need reservations unless you are bringing a group of 20 or more. A 25 percent deposit fee will be taken at the time of any reservation. All participants are required to check-in at the front desk for initial instructions.

The cost is $8 per person, and children 2 years old and under are free. If you want to reserve the whole boat (40 passengers) the cost is $175.
